The sanctuary of Notre-Dame de Lourdes has constituted the biggest centre for French Catholic pilgrimage since Bernadette Soubirous saw the Virgin Mary declaring to be the Immaculate Conception, four years after Pope Pie IX proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, this was Our Lady of Lourdes. The appearances in Lourdes started on 11 February 1858 in the small grotto of Massabielle, not far from the village, along the Gave de Pau river and would last for several months. Bernadette experienced the Virgin Mary eighteen times in total. After looking into them, the bishop of Tarbes, Bertrand-Sévère Laurence, recognised the appearances on 18 January 1862 in the name of the Catholic Church.
