The sanctuaries in Lourdes, at the edge of one of the centres for pilgrimage
Since the 18 apparitions of the Immaculate Conception to Bernadette Soubirous in 1858, the Lourdes sanctuaries have become a must-visit pilgrimage destination for believers and other visitors flock to from all over the world.
Catholics, those who are ill and those who are curious gather together at the Notre-Dame de Lourdes sanctuary to take communion and share inevitable customs, hope, joy and love that know no borders.
Sanctuaries and religious places
Walking in Bernadette’s steps, the faithful pray before the crowned Virgin at the entrance to the Massabielle grotto before leaving an altar candle there. They engage in prayer in the Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire Basilica (inner basilica) the mosaic-covered chapels prove themselves to be real works of art with Romano-Byzantine architecture; others converge at the Saint Pie X underground Basilica built between 1956 and 1958 for the one hundredth anniversary of the apparitions and admire “the path of light”, a series of coloured glass pictures. And whereas some will take part in the torch procession or follow the crèches’ route, others drink the miraculous water in the garden of fountains and immerse themselves in the sanctuaries’ pools. As for those who love architecture, they’ll contemplate the solemn glass windows of the Immaculate Conception basilica (upper basilica) and the relics of Saint Bernadette at the centre of the crypt.
From Lourdes town centre to the surrounding countryside, the Sainte Bernadette Museum, Moulin de Boly, isolation cell, parish church, former presbytery and Sainte Bernadette hospice are all a host of places that marked her life and look back over her story from when she was born.
